David once played football for England! Alan Mullery booked the England team that won the World Cup in 1966 for his testimonial match at Fulham. Two of the squad were unavailable and in their place he invited David and Jimmy Tarbuck to play alongside the likes of Bobby Moore and Jack and Bobby Charlton.
For many years David was captain of the Showbiz Xi football team that raised millions of pounds for various charities. He played on most of the major league grounds and against many top ex-pro players.
D.H. once rode in a speedway race at Wembley Stadium. He and Ed Stewart shared the M.C. duties at Wembley and at the end of the season they took part in a celebrity race with singers Troy Dante and Leapy Lee. A lifelong speedway fan, David was later race-day M.C. for the Reading Racers when they won the British League in 1973.
In 1976 Hamilton`s Hot Shots – a compilation album of David`s Radio One Records of the Week – got to number 13 in the national album chart.
During the Eighties David was runner-up to Tom Selleck in a poll in Woman`s World magazine as “The biggest turn-on on television”. His comment at the time, “If Tom is a Magnum, I must be a Babycham”.
In 1990 he acquired the number plate `D1DDY`. It is now to be seen on his orange Mini Cooper, nicknamed `The Diddymobile`.
David`s dog, Max – a liver and tan Gordon Setter – starred in the TV show, It`s Me Or The Dog, a show about dogs with behavioural problems. Following the show Channel 4 was swamped with phone calls from viewers, asking how they could own a liver and tan Gordon Setter.
For many years David was a member of the Management Committee at Battersea Dogs Home. Today he is an Ambassador of the Roy Castle Fund for Cancer Research and a Patron of the Campaign For Courtesy.
